Chapter Eleven

The rest of the week passed in a blur. Lara had no idea how she functioned, let alone got anything done. The centre hadn’t sunk, so she’d done a good job even while phoning it in, it seemed. Thoughts of the date, and the subsequent kiss, with Eric kept drawing her to La-la-land, and Sam, that cow, hadn’t been any help—amid a flurry of giggles unbecoming her, her bestie had told her to seek the sexual healing she so clearly craved. Lara had cursed her out before shaking her head. Sam had still been laughing when she’d cut the call.

Back at her house that fateful Saturday, Sam’s words kept ringing in her head. Sexual healing. She did need it, but with Eric?

The eruption of a swarm of butterflies in her stomach gave her the answer. She had to admit she wanted him. And what about him? What did he expect of her visit?

With a sigh, she resigned herself to face the situation ahead of her. She’d take things as they came and would deal with them when, and if, certain things actually happened.

The decision anchored in her mind, she faced the daunting prospect of choosing her dress for the evening. She’d need to wear something light and comfortable, as summer still raged on the coasts. Yet, she also had to choose an outfit that wouldn’t make Eric think she was coming on to him. At the same time, the clothes should convey she’d be interested in ‘it’ if ever the occasion arose.

Goodness, was she really thinking in those terms?

Lara giggled. The last time she’d been so nervous for a date had been ... Actually, she couldn’t remember. It’d been way more than a decade since she’d prepared for a date with a new man, and she had to admit the thrill of attempted seduction got to her in a powerful, elated rush.

Her feet grew heavier with every successive trip she made between the wardrobe and the full-length mirror. Nothing looked appropriate. Most of her clothes were formal business suits or traditional Indian attires.

Half a dozen unfruitful trips later, she stood nowhere near a compromise. The soles of her feet grew hot as she paced the rug between the wardrobe and the bed. Exasperation won and she pulled all the clothes from the racks and threw them in a messy pile on the floor.

A peek of a tie-and-dye design caught her attention, and she pulled it from the mountain of fabric. The sleeveless cotton sundress hung light and breezy, perfect for a summer evening, with the knee-length skirt not too short and the non-plunging neckline. The deep, bottle-green colour made the same kind of statement as a bold red, but without the apparent seductive undertone.

Thirty minutes later, during which she’d ironed the dress without burning it and after having taken a shower, she was ready. Lara checked the image the mirror sent her. The dress draped over her figure and hinted at her curves. All right, at the bones of her hips, since she didn’t have fleshy curves.
